Lying on hundreds of small plastic points sounds like a strange way to relax. Then you try it, and after the first minute something changes. If you've just bought an acupressure mat (or you're curious about one), the most common question is simple: how long should you actually lie on it?
The short answer
Start with 5 minutes. Build up to 15 to 20 minutes over a couple of weeks. That's the range most people settle into, usually in the evening.
What the first session feels like
Minute 1: intense. Prickly. You'll probably wonder why you did this.
Minutes 2 to 5: the sharpness fades into warmth and heaviness. Most people start to breathe slower here.
Minutes 10 to 20: this is where many people stop thinking about the mat at all. Some fall asleep.
A simple two-week plan
- Days 1 to 3: 5 minutes, wearing a thin T-shirt.
- Days 4 to 7: 10 minutes. Try it on bare skin if you'd like more intensity.
- Week 2: 15 to 20 minutes, whenever it fits your day. After work and before bed are the most popular times.
How to get on (and off) comfortably
- Lay the mat on the floor or on your bed. A softer surface makes it gentler.
- Sit on the edge, then lower your back down slowly so your weight spreads evenly.
- Put the pillow under your neck, or under your knees if your lower back prefers that.
- Keep still and breathe slowly. Moving around makes it feel sharper.
- To get up, roll to your side first.
Other ways to use it
- Stand on it for 1 to 3 minutes, barefoot, while you brush your teeth.
- Sit on it against your chair back while you read or watch something.
- Pillow only: rest your neck on it for a few minutes after a long screen day.
When not to use it
Skip the mat on broken, irritated or sunburned skin, during pregnancy, or if you have a bleeding disorder, diabetes-related skin sensitivity, or any medical condition, unless your doctor says it's fine. Stop if you feel sharp pain.
