Eight hours in a chair adds up. Your shoulders drift forward, your hips stay folded, and by 4pm everything feels a little stiff. You don't need a gym or a yoga mat to change that. These five stretches take about five minutes, you can do them next to your desk, and nobody on your next call will notice.
Move slowly and stay in a range that feels comfortable. A stretch should feel like a gentle pull, never sharp pain.
1. Chin tuck (30 seconds)
Sit tall and look straight ahead. Without tilting your head, slide your chin straight back, as if you were making a double chin. Hold for 3 seconds, relax, and repeat 8 to 10 times. It's the opposite of the "leaning into the screen" posture most of us hold all day.
2. Doorway chest opener (45 seconds)
Stand in a doorway and place your forearms on the frame, elbows at shoulder height. Step one foot forward until you feel a stretch across your chest and the front of your shoulders. Breathe slowly for 20 to 30 seconds. No doorway? Clasp your hands behind your back and gently lift them.
3. Seated twist (1 minute)
Sit near the front of your chair with your feet flat on the floor. Place your right hand on the outside of your left knee and your left hand on the back of the chair. Sit tall, then turn gently to the left. Hold for 5 slow breaths and switch sides.
4. Standing hip flexor stretch (1 minute)
Hours of sitting keep the front of your hips short. Step your right foot back into a small lunge, keep your torso upright and gently tuck your pelvis under until you feel a stretch at the front of your right hip. Hold for 30 seconds, then switch.
5. Hamstring stretch with a chair (1 minute)
Stand facing your chair and rest one heel on the seat, leg straight but not locked. Hinge forward from your hips with a long back until you feel the back of your thigh. Hold for 30 seconds per side. If your hamstrings are tight, a strap makes this one much easier: loop it around your foot and hold the strap instead of reaching for your toes.
How often?
Once a day is a great start. If you can, do the whole routine mid-morning and again mid-afternoon. Setting a reminder on your phone helps more than willpower.

These stretches need nothing but your body. If you'd like to make the most of the evening, two simple tools help:
- The Loop Strap: numbered loops so you can hold a hamstring, hip or shoulder stretch without forcing it.
- The Back Arch: lie back on it for a few minutes and let your upper back open up after a day of leaning forward.
